Informed Consent

Thank you for your interest and willingness to participate in this survey. You are being asked to take part in a study that examines the attitudes, beliefs and experiences of a diverse sample of women as they relate to the current feminist movements, including, but not limited to #MeToo and #TimesUp.

Based on the topic of this research project, invitations to participate are limited to individuals that self-identify as a female and are between the ages of 18 and 65 years of age.
This research project is being conducted by a team of student and faculty researchers in the Department of Psychology and College of Professional Studies at Bowie State University.  This study has received approval from the Bowie State University Institutional Review Board (IRB Number 018 - summer -003).

WHAT WILL HAPPEN: In this study, participants that self-identify as female and meet the age criteria will be asked to anonymously complete a series of online self-rating forms, which include a demographic questionnaire (e.g., age, race/ethnicity, marital status, family structure, etc.) and a series of brief surveys which explore participant’s attitudes about, awareness of and experiences with the feminist movement and opinions about the impact this movement has had on each participant. It will take approximately 25 minutes to complete this survey.

PARTICIPANT’S RIGHTS: Your participation in this research is completely voluntary and you have the option to decline to participate or discontinue this research project at any time without explanation or penalty. Should you feel uncomfortable answering any particular questions, you may decline to respond to such question(s), as you see fit. 

BENEFITS AND RISKS: There are no known benefits for participating in this research. However, you may experience positive feelings associated with contributing to social science. A potential risk of participation is experiencing emotional discomfort in response to questions about or experiences with sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexism or other forms of discrimination. Should you experience anxiety or emotional distress as a result of participating in this research, resources that may help ease your discomfort will be provided. You will also have the option to speak with Principal Investigator and Psychologist, Dr. Ayanna Lynch, or referred to a local mental health professional. 

COMPENSATION: Your participation in this research will be completely voluntary. No financial compensation will be offered for your participation. However, upon the successful completion of the survey, you will have the option to enter a raffle to win a $50 Visa Gift Card on a form separate from the survey. To enter, participant’s name and contact information must be provided on the raffle form.

CONFIDENTIALITY/ANONYMITY:  Confidentiality and participant’s anonymity will be protected throughout this research project. All participants will complete all information anonymously, including this consent form. Identifying information will neither be requested nor collected such that a participant’s identity could be disclosed or eventually be linked to this study. Each completed survey will be assigned a unique ID number. Survey and raffle data will be kept separate. All data will be password protected, to which the researchers will have exclusive access.
