The Government of Maharashtra, Tata Trusts and British Council India are launching a three-year teacher development programme called the English Language Initiative for Primary Schools 2 (ELIPS 2). The aim of this programme is to improve the quality of English language teaching in primary schools in nine districts in Maharashtra (Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli, Nashik, Nandurbar, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Amravati and Yavatmal).

As part of this programme, we are looking to select and train a cadre of enthusiastic and experienced teachers from each of these nine districts to become ELIPS2 Master Trainers. Master Trainers will receive training and support from the British Council and will play a key role in supporting primary teachers at the cluster level through setting up and facilitating Teacher Activity Groups (TAGs).

What does a Master Trainer have to do?

A core part of ELIPS2 is to familiarise primary school teachers from the nine districts mentioned above with learner-centred classroom approaches, improve their confidence in using English and to provide them with increased opportunities for continuing professional development. This will be done through the establishment of Teacher Activity Groups (TAGs) for primary teachers at the cluster level. Primary teachers from schools within the cluster will attend monthly TAG meetings where they will practise their English, discuss and share ideas relating to developing their teaching practice, and make action plans to try out new teaching ideas and techniques in their lessons.

You will be responsible for:

  • setting up and facilitating TAGs at the cluster level with the help of Cluster Heads/Kendra Pramukhs
  • facilitating TAG meetings using materials provided by the British Council
  • setting up and facilitating discussions on WhatsApp groups for teachers who attend TAGs
  • supporting and mentoring teachers in their schools
  • documenting TAG activities and sending regular online reports to the State Institute of English (SIE) to track the progress of TAGs and impact on teachers and their learners.

What support will you receive?

  • Face-to-face training from the British Council for eight days in both Year 1 and Year 2, and three days in Year 3 (total 19 days over three years)
  • Ongoing support throughout the project from the British Council and SIE through WhatsApp, Facebook and other digital platforms
  • British Council online language development course to improve your own English language.

This is your opportunity to play a key role in a new innovative teacher development programme and support the teaching and learning of English in the state and a great developmental opportunity for you.

Please note: If you are selected as a Master Trainer on ELIPS 2, you will be required to conduct project activities outside of school hours including Saturdays.

Please submit this online application form by Tuesday 31 May 2016 (midnight).
