For nearly a century, MacGregor Park has served as a gathering and recreational space for many Houstonians. Following a comprehensive and community-based master plan process, the Houston City Council approved significant renovations to this Third Ward jewel in December 2023. The reimagining of the park, led by Houston Parks Board, will honor the park’s history and cultural significance.

The following two design concepts include all of the park programs decided upon with the community during the masterplan process; they differ in how they tell the story of MacGregor Park. The intent of the questionnaire is not to pick one of the concepts but to understand what and why you prefer certain elements within each concept.

Question Title

* 1. The community has expressed a desire to connect with nature throughout the park. Below are photos of three specific natural habitats. Please indicate any of these you want to see in MacGregor Park. Choose as many as you like and briefly describe why you like this habitat.

Concept Scenario 1: Commemoration

The park's redesign allows us to commemorate existing elements and add elements that remind us of our history and help tell the park's story.

This design introduces ample new natural spaces in and throughout the park and pays homage to the roadways that currently bisect it. The Community Center and Swimming Pool stay in place, while elements like the baseball pitch, Homer Ford Tennis Center, and parking are reoriented within the park.

Question Title

* 4. What design features are you most interested in or excited about?

* 5. What design features do you believe have limited functionality/use?
Example: There are not many ways for people to walk around the park on formal walking paths.

Question Title

* 6. What feature of the current park amenities should we commemorate?
Example: If the baseball field moves, the home plate should be preserved and in-cased with a description.

Concept Scenario 2: Community Stories

This design will seek to balance the everyday uses of the park with programmatic uses to create spaces for locals and visitors. Patterns of the everyday influence how specific program space will be preserved, accommodated, and expanded in the new design to address both functional and sociocultural aspects of the park.

This design emphasizes existing greenspaces in the park and uses them as guides to place programmatic elements. Loop trails, parking lots, and walking paths lend themselves to daily/neighborhood users and visitors with equal mindfulness.
