The Manitoba Urban Forestry Council (MUFC) is leading an initiative to seek non-compulsory trade designation for the arborist profession in Manitoba.
There are two ways to become a tradesperson.

1) Apprenticeship Program
  • 20% classroom 80% field
  • 2-3 levels
  • Write the exam
2) Trade Qualification
  • Demonstrate years of working within the scope of the trade
  • Write the exam

The Costs

Fees are regulated by the Apprenticeship and Certification Act


Fees 1
The following fees are payable under The Apprenticeship and Certification Act:
(a) assessment of prior training and experience . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $200;
(b) trades qualifications certification examination . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $400;
(c) trades qualifications certification re-examination . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $100

Tuition fees 2(1)
The following tuition fees for technical training are payable under The Apprenticeship and Certification Act, at all levels of apprenticeship training:
(a) class length up to 8 weeks . . . . . . . . $464;
(b) each additional week of class after initial 8 weeks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $58

Wage levels are also standardized by the act and are a set percentage above minimum wage. As of October 1st minimum wage in Manitoba is $16.00/hr. Set minimum could be $17.60/hr.

  • improves safety through standardized training
  • addresses labour shortages
  • enhances workforce readiness
  • adds Manitoba to the list of trade designated supporting a National Red Seal opportunity (5 provinces required as trade designated)
