Course Description:  This class offers insights into and better understanding of the religion and culture of the part of the world referred to as the Middle East or incorrectly as “The Arab World.” An essential part in understanding the issues is to understand the history of the region and the basics of Islam, the fastest growing religion in the world. The instructor, Roger Kass, has lived in the Middle East and bring first-hand experiences to the class. In addition, the course involves watching and discussing portions of several videos. After participating in this class, you will: have an understanding of the difference between Islam and Islamists, Jihadists and Islamic radicals in general. You will have an appreciation of the challenges facing both the Western and the Muslim worlds; and a better understanding of the issues and challenges facing the U.S. and the world in dealing with radical Islamists.
