Thank you for registering to attend, "A Place for Us: An Interactive Virtual Symposium (V.II) taking place on Saturday, November 28, 2020 from 2-4 PM via Zoom.

This is a free event for Black, Indigenous and racialized folks to collectively nurture their creative explorations & imaginations. During this symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with facilitated workshops in music, writing, wellness, and the arts. Previous experience and preparation is not required. Simply come as you are!

* 3. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in three workshops during the symposium. If you have a preference for the workshops you wish to participate in, please indicate below. If you do not have a preference, simply leave this section blank.

1. Chair Yoga by Lauren Pragg

This workshop will be an opportunity to get grounded in your body and breath. We will do some gentle seated movements together that can be adapted to any comfort level.

About the facilitator:

Lauren is the child of Trinidadian born parents who immigrated to Toronto in the 1970s. They acknowledge the authority and sovereignty of the Indigenous guardians of the land they live on. They also acknowledge the commitments and principles of the Two Row Wampum and the Dish With One Spoon covenant. They hope to live in such a way to honour the land and peoples whose land they are a guest upon.

Lauren loves watching movies and staying home. They believe there’s a long tradition of radical hermits such as Octavia Butler, and they hope to uncover that history and carry on the practice in moderation. They also love spring mornings and fall afternoons. They have a niece and a nephew they adore.

3. Cre8tive Clay by Connie Tong

This workshop we allow participants to explore the tactile nature of clay in an interactive way. Participants will be gently guided to create their own clay piece. Participants can create pieces that have a functional purpose like containing liquids or solids or have a metaphorical expression such as holding on to memories, thoughts and feelings.

Participants are required to have access to clay (which can be bought at the dollar store or made at home even!) If you require assistance in procuring clay, please email scarboroughmutualaid@gmail.com!

About the facilitator:

Connie Tong is a Scarborough based art educator and community artist who received a Bachelor of Design from OCAD University specializing in jewellery and ceramics. She has exhibited her work across the GTA and has taught visual arts classes at various public and non
profit organization. She serves as a board of directors for multiple arts organization in Scarborough and facilitates various arts program for children and youth living in underserved neighbourhood in hopes of using art as a vehicle for healthy living and building community
capacity.

5. Reclaim Your Energy by Elle Rosher

With the holidays a few weeks away and another lockdown put in place, stress levels are rising. In this workshop, you'll learn the one mindset shift you need to handle life's curveballs with energy and grace.

About the facilitator:

Elle Rosher is a mindset coach for womxn striving to unlearn the habit of seeking validation from others. Once a people-pleaser herself, she recognized the detrimental impact of living a life constantly striving to fulfill others' expectations. While completing her Neuroscience degree in Toronto, she gained valuable insight into the brain’s neurocircuitry and methods useful to alter unhelpful thoughts. In her down time, you can usually find Elle cuddled up on the couch reading a romance novel or dancing to her favourite tunes.

2. Writing Home by FeelWays

Writing home is a writing workshop inviting participants to write a love letter to home - exploring what home means for us. What does home look like? What does home make you feel? How do we thank this home? Participants are invited to come with writing tools that they are most comfortable with and have access to (e.g., pen, markers, paper, napkin, computer, writing app on the phone, etc.).

About the facilitators:

Mauriene Tolentino
Mauriene (she/they) is a queer first-generation settler of Minanaoan and Visayan roots from the Philippines who now lives nearby Ganatsekwyagon built by the Seneca people at the mouth of the Rouge River. A community organizer by instinct and policy analyst by profession, Mauriene’s labour of love is dedicated to structural changes for collective healing from violent oppressive systems. Mauriene is currently a Project Coordinator and Curator of Remember When, a FEEL WAYS project for Nuit Blanche 2021.

Natasha Ramoutar
Natasha Ramoutar is an Indo-Guyanese writer by way of Scarborough (Ganatsekwyagon) at the east side of Toronto. She has been published in The Unpublished City II, PRISM International, Room Magazine, Living Hyphen and more. She is the Social Media Assistant at the Festival of Literary Diversity and the Fiction Editor of FEEL WAYS, an anthology of Scarborough writing. Her first poetry collection Bittersweet was published by Mawenzi House in 2020.

4. Creating a #Mood through Music by Dynesti

Join Dynesti as we dive into the the foundations of music creation. Music can change the mood of people in any setting. In our workshop, we will explore how to turn a good concept into a sonic experience that your audience will remember.

About the facilitator:

Dynesti inspires people to reconnect to their higher selves through bold and unapologetic performances, lyrics, videos, workshops, and musical experiences. She is a fierce entertainer and music & money coach from Toronto with a contagious energy that motivates transformation in those around her. Nicknamed "The Dyna" for delivering energy like food for the soul, Dyna invites you to sit at the table of life's beautiful chaos using it to sharpen you into a creative powerhouse.
