BSSH Masters: Director of Education

Expression of Interest

3-year tenure: Jan 2027- Dec 2029

Deadline 21st October 2026
Thank you for your interest in this new opportunity that has arisen to lead the BSSH Masters Programme in Hand Surgery.
This is a three-year appointment commencing in January 2027.

For the first time, this role is being advertised as a stand-alone position, separate from the responsibilities of Diploma Internal Advisor and Chair of Examiners. The postholder will hold a position on the BSSH Hand Diploma and Masters Committee and will play a key role in supporting the continued development of the Masters programme.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with an interest in research and postgraduate education to help shape and develop the programme. The role will focus on overseeing the Masters course as a whole and facilitating each student’s progression through the programme, rather than providing direct supervision of individual Masters dissertations.
Fixed time requirements per year:
  • Initial reading of the course manual 2-4hrs.
  • Exam board meeting 1hr + 1-2hrs prep (Jan)
  • R&D course 1 hr lecture (already prepared).
  • R&D course organisational queries/set up 2-4hrs of emails (most of the burden of the course is handled by Co-ordinator).
  • Prepare yearly reports for the Exam board and update (via the Diploma Director) BSSH council of any changes to the course or requirements.
  • June: Diploma and Masters committee meeting x1 f2f committee 8hrs (+1hr reading prep papers)
  • September: Diploma and Masters committee meeting x1 online 2hrs (+30min reading prep)
  • Note: Other workstreams TBC such as modernising the course etc

Applications will be formally considered by committee at the end of October with anticipation you will attend the Jan 2027 meeting of the Exam Board.
