Welcome

TAKING EDUCATION BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE CLASSROOM
May 24-26 and 27, 2016

The Center for Social Concerns offers the Community Engagement Faculty Institute for all who want to explore or deepen their knowledge, skills, and passion for community-based teaching and research. The agenda for this dynamic Community Engagement Faculty Institute is imbued with engaged learning, mixing lectures by faculty and community experts on the theory and practice of community engagement with travel into the local community to learn with community partners. We address a range of social concerns, such as healthcare, immigration, incarceration, and education.  The overall focus of the 2016 Faculty Institute will be poverty.

NEW! An optional fourth day is available to participants who would like to focus on assessment of community-based teaching and research. Anne Weiss, Director of Assessment at Indiana Campus Compact, will offer an Assessment Workshop Friday, May 27. The entire Notre Dame community is welcome to attend this Community Engagement Assessment Workshop (you do not have to enroll in the full Faculty Institute to participate in this one-day workshop). Please register to attend the Assessment Workshop here.  Space is limited. Applications for the Faculty Institute will be reviewed by Center for Social Concerns faculty and affiliated Fellows on a rolling basis; those admitted into the Faculty Institute will be notified of acceptance as quickly as possible.

Participants selected will be recognized at the Rodney F. Ganey Awards Dinner in April and will receive, upon completion of the full Faculty Institute, $250 deposited to their research account to be applied toward community-based research and teaching (note that eligibility for the stipend is limited only to Notre Dame faculty, staff, and graduate students who will be at Notre Dame the following fall--participants from outside Notre Dame will not receive a stipend). Breakfast and lunch are provided each day.  Past participants testify to the power and inspiration of this unique faculty learning experience.
