Tug-of-War might not be for your department. It’s rough. It’s tough. In the trenches with your teammate trying not to get pulled around. But one team is going to get pulled around. One team is going to get dragged across the line and experience the old sport adage: “The agony of defeat.”

Departments will register a team and smaller departments can join with other departments to form a team. Teams can have as many players as you can fit on your side of the rope. Departments may have more than one team but no participant may tug on more than one team during MMGs 2026.

A large Tug-of-War rope will be divided in two by a flag tied around the rope. Each team’s players can take their position and grab their end of the rope. Each team member must be able to place two hands on the rope. When you run out of rope you can no longer add team members. On the whistle, each team pulls. The first team to drag the flag across their end zone line wins.

Tips:

- There is an optimal team size.

- Too few players and your team can’t pull with the most force.

- Too many players, and your team can’t get spacing and footing to pull with the most force.

- Pay attention to the rope.

- If your team starts losing, don’t get dragged into each other.

- Don’t let the rope move in your hand – you don’t want rope burn.

- Work as a team

- Pull together

- Stall together

- A team that is pulling at different times won’t pull with the greatest force.
