Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey - it only takes less than 10 minutes!

The aim of this survey is to give you some food for thought when it comes to how African NRENs and Institutions are contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

This survey follows the online webinar held in September 2022 and is in preparation for the face to face workshop that will be hosted by the UbuntuNet Alliance in Botswana on Thursday afternoon, 24 November 2022. The workshop will be an interactive meeting where participants will get the chance to collect, share and discuss concrete examples of contributions to SDGs.

Now, let's talk about SDGs!

Question Title

* 1. Please enter your name and job function

Question Title

* 2. Please enter the name of your NREN or Institution

Question Title

* 3. Before our webinar, had you or your organisation ever considered your work in the context of UN SDGs?

Question Title

* 4. Please choose up to 5 SDGs that you think - at first glance - African NRENs contribute to DIRECTLY.

Question Title

* 5. SDG 8.5: "By 2020, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training."

We think that, through increased access to educational facilities and e-learning services, NRENs facilitate the ability of students to learn skills that improve their employability. Therefore, NRENs contribute DIRECTLY to this Goal.

Do you agree? Can you give at least one example of an activity that your NREN or Institution is carrying out in contribution to this target?

Question Title

* 6. SDG 9.5: "Enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including, by 2030, encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending".

Through providing more affordable internet connectivity, NRENs enhance scientific research possibilities and upgrade the technological capacities of their member Institutions. NARSS, the undersea ANTARES neutrino telescope, ATLAS experiment, The Square Kilometre Array, and Utafiti Africa are just some of the scientific research and experiments that NRENs have contributed to through their connectivity and services.

If you agree, do you have other examples in mind?

Question Title

* 7. Please choose up to 5 SDGs that you think - at first glance - African NRENs contribute to INDIRECTLY.

Question Title

* 8. SDG 2.1: "By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round"

Do you think that by supporting the connectivity needs of Institutions and research centres that work on topics like food sustainability and agriculture, and hence enhancing their research capabilities, NRENs contribute INDIRECTLY to this Goal?

It is possible to apply the same thinking to the following Goals: 2.4 (enhance agricultural productivity), 3.3 (end epidemics and diseases), 6.5 (water management), 12.2 (sustainability of natural resources), 13.1 and 13.3 (climate-related hazards), 14.a (marine technology), and 15.3 (combat desertification and soil degradation).

If yes, do you have some specific examples from your NREN or Institution?

Question Title
