This survey is the first step in a community-led process to explore, shape and co-create open-source tools to support open science research in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

The process is independently facilitated. This facilitation creates the space, connections and processes for researchers and others involved in open science research to collectively identify what is worth developing, explore possible approaches, and shape how any resulting tools are developed and governed.

The survey will be followed by focus groups, workshops and community meetings, creating opportunities for deeper discussion, iteration and shared decision-making throughout the process.

eLife Pathways takes the definition of "open source" from opensource.com: "something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible"; and the definition of "open science" from UNESCO: "making scientific knowledge openly available, accessible and reusable".
