Study Title: The Effect of Exposure to Populist Messages on Social-Media on Anxiety

 

I am a student at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. This study is being conducted as a part of my dissertation requirement for The Clinical Psychology PsyD Program.

 

I am asking you to participate in a research study to examine the effects of exposure to populist messages on social media use. You will be asked to complete 6 pre questionnaires, then tasked with reading a specific populist post for at least 30 seconds, and then you will be tasked with taking 4 post questionnaires. This entire process will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. This may cause you to feel confused about the purpose of some of the questions and your confidentiality may be at risk due to the nature of conducting research on the internet. Although you may not benefit, it will help to understand how the exposure to these messages affect individuals.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of exposure to populist messages on social media on individual’s anxiety levels. I hope to understand how these messages can affect individuals.

 

Procedures: You will be recruited and asked to complete 6 pre questionnaires and 4 post questionnaires. You will be sent a link to a program called Survey Monkey where you will complete the pre-questionnaires, then you will be instructed to read multiple social media posts, then you will be instructed to complete post questionnaires. The process in total will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. After completion of the study procedures you will be provided with a de-briefing statement.

 

Compensation: Individuals who participate in this study will be entered into a raffle to potentially win a $50 gift card to Amazon, which will be sent to them digitally through their provided contact.

 

Risks to Participants: The potential risks associated with participation include an increased level of anxiety due to exposure to specific social media posts and a potential loss of confidentiality due to the collection of demographic information. Survey Monkey will not collect IP addresses. Risks will be minimized as the information will be stored on an encrypted computer.

 

Benefits to Participants:  There is no direct benefit to you from this study. However, the hope is that the information learned from this study may benefit the fields of psychology and politics in understanding how certain messages affect individuals.

 

Alternatives to Participation: Participation in this study is voluntary. You may withdraw from study participation at any time without any penalty.

 

Confidentiality: During this study, information will be collected about you for the purpose of this research. Only Demographic data will be gathered. Demographic data includes age, gender identity, race/ethnicity, country of residence, whether you have children, income group, current level of education, what languages you speak fluently, and your current relationship status.

 

Strict steps will be taken to guard the confidentiality of all participants. All information that is gathered will be stored on an encrypted computer that is only accessible by the principal investigator. In addition, research materials will be kept for a minimum of five years after publication per the American Psychological Association guidelines.

 

It is possible that your data may be used for future research or distributed to another researcher without your consent. However, information that could identify you will be removed.
