Civil Beat Community News Survey - Big Island

Aloha, Big Island resident,

My name is Kevin Dayton, and I am a longtime Hawaiʻi journalist and Hilo resident. I write for Honolulu Civil Beat, a nonprofit online news publication, and we need your help.

As you probably know, the news business is changing to adapt to the digital age — but it remains just as vital as ever to democracy and holding public officials to account and keeping up with the happenings in our hometowns. We must change with it, and we want to make our work at Civil Beat as useful and important to you and your community as possible. To do that, we need to learn more about what you think about local news on our island.

Civil Beat is conducting this study to better understand if Big Island residents have access to the news and information they need to navigate life in Hawai'i County. We know people have many interests in different topics and issues, and everyone has their own preferences for how they want to receive information. This survey will help us identify what might be missing — that is, any gaps in the flow of information you want — to help us do a better job serving you.

This survey is structured so that your responses and comments will be anonymous unless you choose to provide your information for follow-up conversations with members of the Civil Beat staff.

Thank you for providing your valuable time and insights.
