Covington's parks, trails, and recreation programs bring joy to families, strengthen neighborhoods, and enhance our quality of life. However, there is currently no dedicated and sustainable funding to expand or improve the city's parks and trails - despite the growing need for more accessible, high-quality parks and trails to support our community's health, recreation, and quality of life. That means no new play areas, trails, or upgraded sports fields. But we have a chance to change that.

The City of Covington is exploring the formation of a Metropolitan Park District (MPD) - a long-term, locally controlled solution that keeps funding in our community and supports the parks and programs we all value. An MPD must be approved by voters.

If approved, an MPD for Covington could help fund:
  • A new aquatic and recreation center
  • New sports fields at Covington Community Park
  • Pickleball courts, trails, picnic shelters, and more at Founders Park
  • Expanded trails and restored natural areas at Jenkins Creek Park
  • Expansion of the Jenkins Creek Trail to connect different neighborhoods throughout the city and to connect to the county's regional trail system
  • A new off-leash dog park
  • Renovated neighborhood parks like Crystal View and Friendship Park
  • Improvements to school district sports fields
  • Increased park maintenance to improve the care of the parks and trails
  • Expanded programming for aquatics activities, athletic leagues, recreation classes, and community events
But first we want to hear from you. A proposed MPD is being considered as a ballot measure in 2026. This year, we are asking the Covington community to share their preferences with us, so the MPD can reflect what the community wants.

The following pages provide additional information about the projects and services an MPD can help fund. You will be able to share with us how important each of these projects and service areas are to you and provide additional feedback.
