A group of people have been meeting for the past year to bring a full-service grocery store cooperative to central Grand Rapids. Many people have been wanting more food options near downtown and we hope to fulfill this very real need. You can follow our work on Facebook at facebook.com/GRFCI. We are conducting a short survey over the next few weeks to get your input to help us decide how much a membership share will cost.
Food cooperatives are grocery stores that rely on member-owners to buy a lifetime share to become member-owners. Although anyone is welcome to shop at our food coop, food coops are owned by their member-owners.
Your benefits as a member-owner:
Helping to establish a full-service grocery store in the heart of Grand Rapids
Having a voice and vote in our cooperative, democratic business model
Participating in educational opportunities
Enjoying new community space for programming and socializing
Helping our local economy and local agriculture and keeping our profits local
Taking advantage of member-owner discounts
Counting on staff members to research products
With your share and those of others, we will have the capital to:
Grow the member-ownership (60 member-owners – start site search)
Elect a governing board (100 member-owners)
Hire a Project Manager (320 member-owners)
Secure a location (1000 member-owners – site contract signed with conditions)
Secure financing, including member-owner loans, grants, and bank loans
