United for Libraries invites you to apply for a Literary Landmark™ designation for any special location in your community that is tied to a deceased literary figure, author, or his or her work. The cost for a Literary Landmark is payable to United for Libraries upon acceptance of the application. Please email united@ala.org for the current fee.

United for Libraries members receive a discount. The fee covers all materials and administrative costs, including:
  • A bronze plaque, foundry crafted, with the Literary Landmark insignia and verbiage of your choosing. (A representative from United for Libraries will guide you in this.)
  • Press release provided by United for Libraries for use in local media outlets.
  • Press release furnished to national library and literary journals with photo (provided by the locality) post-event.
  • Listing of the Literary Landmark on United for Libraries’ website and other United for Libraries materials relating to Literary Landmarks.
Please fill out the information below and include the following with your application:
  • Background material that corroborates the role of the site, and a bibliography of the author’s work and related writings (or a link to the information).
  • A list of the group(s) or individual(s) who will be responsible for the site and guarantee its continued designation.
  • If possible, a general overview of plans for the Literary Landmark dedication ceremony, including any cosponsors, speakers, special guests, performances, site tours, etc. Include plans for publicizing the dedication.
For more information about Literary Landmarks, visit www.ala.org/united/products_services/literarylandmarks. To avoid rush/shipping charges, the plaque specifications (color, text, mounting, etc.) need to be approved at least eight weeks ahead of the time when you will need the plaque. Therefore the application should be submitted at least three months ahead of the date of the dedication. If accepted, you are required to provide a summary (with photos, if applicable) of the dedication ceremony after it has taken place.

Please contact United for Libraries at (800) 545-2433, ext. 2161, or united@ala.org with any questions.
