About the Survey

The Adult Room is the largest space in the Library at 10,800 square feet. It needs new carpeting, repairs to the skylight area and other updating. Since this involves temporarily vacating the space, McMillan wants to examine how the space can best contribute to its mission of "Strengthening our community through lifelong learning". Much has changed at McMillan and those changes should be reflected in this space.

Based on the Library's Plan of Service, comments / requests from library users and our understanding of the future of libraries, we see important community needs that could be met in a revised Adult Room.
1. A working / studying space, incorporating: a quiet space; small/medium meeting rooms; and collaborative public spaces.
2. An expanded makerspace.
3. About 1/3 of the space is used to house the print collection, which continues to receive heavy use.

This survey is your opportunity to guide how the space is designed and developed. Please take advantage of the option of choosing "Other" and add your own suggestions.

Work / study space
Entrepreneurs and start-ups often lack formal office space. Sometimes, they lack necessary office equipment, software and technology. Larger cities have commercial coworking facilities, which meet those needs. These facilities also provide a social network for individuals who might otherwise be isolated. McMillan already has most of the features of a coworking site - WiFi, public computers, copiers, printers, scanners, fax, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Premiere, Acrobat), online classes through Gale Courses, coffee and food.

Students have many of the same needs. This is especially true of those taking Internet based classes.

A Quiet Study / Work Room
The Library consists of three main spaces. The Youth Services / Children's Room is often quite active. The Commons is designated as a social area, where conversation and group activities are encouraged. The Adult Room is zoned for quiet, but it is difficult to keep it quiet enough for those studying and working.

The Library is considering a quiet room (600-900 square feet) where conversation would be kept to a minimum and cell phone use prohibited. This would serve both students at all levels and anyone who needs a quiet place to work.

Question Title

* 8. Have you found McMillan too noisy for your use?

Question Title

* 9. What would you use in a quiet room? Assume it has WiFi and access to a printer. Select all that apply.

Small / Medium Meeting Rooms
While McMillan has three large meeting rooms, it has no small ones for casual use. Based on the many requests we have had for such space, it is an unmet need in the community.

We are considering at least one medium sized room (6-12 people / 225 sq ft) and multiple smaller rooms (1-6 people / 100 sq ft). Each would have a screen for shared viewing or video conferencing. They would be available to individuals but priority would be given to groups. The medium room(s) could be reserved, with an annual limit.

Question Title

* 10. Have you, or a group you belong to, had trouble finding meeting space locally?

Question Title

* 11. How would you use a medium sized room (6-12 people)? Select all that apply.

Question Title

* 12. How would you use a small room (1-6 people)? Select all that apply.

Question Title

* 13. McMillan Memorial Library currently permits only groups engaged in educational and cultural activities to use the large Library meeting rooms. Tutoring and group study are permitted only in the Commons area. All meetings must be open to the public. What should our rules be for any new small / medium rooms? Select all that apply.

An Expanded Makerspace
McMillan opened a makerspace in 2015 with the goal of developing a space for content creation across a broad spectrum of interests, ages and formats. The makerspace is open primarily after school on weekdays. It is about 500 square feet and is located backstage of the Fine Arts Center.

Though it is a good start, we are outgrowing our space and looking to expand both services and hours. We want to make sure any expansion meets community needs.
