Effective mathematics instructional coaching focuses on student thinking, allowing a coach to help teachers extend their understanding of mathematics content and pedagogy, deepen their understanding of instructional strategies, analyze and assess student work, and improve teaching (SVMI 2007). Coaching can help teachers effectively transfer professional learning into daily practice, and help support the reflective process for teachers.

The MCMI Mathematics Coaching Institute is designed for educators who serve in a coaching role in their districts and schools; they may be released either full-time or part-time, but should have the opportunity to support teachers to improve their instructional practice.

The Institute comprises six sessions, with the first two sessions (September and November) designed especially for newly-participating coaches. (The following four sessions should be attended by both new and experienced coaches.)

There is no cost for participation for districts that are members of the MCMI Mathematics PD Consortium. If your district is not a member of a PD Consortium, please contact Mary Jo Tavormina, mjtav@uic.edu, regarding availability and registration fees.
