Maryland Cancer Collaborative
Workgroup Sign-Up

The Maryland Cancer Collaborative (MCC) is recruiting members to new workgroups formed around its priority strategies from the Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. Workgroups will begin meeting in August 2021 to create action plans to implement their priorities. Please indicate whether you would like to join one or more of the new workgroups by selecting below.

Tobacco Workgroup:
1. Educate vulnerable populations, such as low socioeconomic minority communities, the LGBTQ communities and those with mental health and substance use disorders, through health communications efforts, including mass-reach media, to change social norms about tobacco use (including ESDs) and to promote evidence-based tobacco cessation and treatment services including the Maryland Tobacco Quitline, local health department-funded resources, and available Medicaid benefits.

2. Work with health systems to expand utilization of evidence-based tobacco cessation and treatment methods, including inpatient tobacco treatment counseling, referrals to the Maryland Tobacco Quitline, and nicotine replacement therapy.

HPV Workgroup:
1. Educate health care providers, particularly pediatricians, on the importance of making a strong and timely HPV vaccination recommendation, with a focus on cancer prevention.

2. Educate parents and/or guardians about the availability and importance of HPV vaccination for adolescent girls and boys, with a focus on cancer prevention.

3. Implement systems changes within health care practices to:
a. Check teenage patients’ vaccination status and offer all indicated vaccines at each visit,

b. Schedule the next HPV vaccination dose before the end of the current appointment, and

c. Utilize reminder and recall strategies.

Advanced Care Planning Workgroup:
1. Partner with Maryland cancer support networks and coalitions to determine effective strategies to support advance care planning among cancer survivors.

2. Educate health care providers on having culturally sensitive advance care planning discussions, including the sharing of key documents, with all newly diagnosed Marylanders with cancer.

Cancer Screening Workgroup:
1. Modification of a strategy: Compile a resource for healthcare providers on best practices to reduce structural barriers to cancer screening and diagnostic work-up.

2. Educate providers and medical professionals on the rising incidence of colorectal cancer in adults under 50 years old and the needs for screening for colorectal cancer in 45+ individuals.

Communications Workgroup / Support Team:
Members of this group will support the activities of the other MCC workgroups. Recommendation to approach this support through the lens of health equity and addressing the needs of vulnerable and underserved populations.
