Parent/Guardian Informational Letter Study of Online Math Program

Your child’s school is helping us learn more about an online math program.
WestEd, a non-profit organization, is learning more about an online math program called MathByExample. The U.S. Department of Education is funding this research study. Your child may use online math activities throughout the school year as part of their regular school activities. Your child will also take up to seven assessments or surveys about math knowledge and attitudes towards math.

What is the research about?
We want to find out if using MathByEample materials improves students’ learning and whether these types of materials should be incorporated more broadly into math classes for all students

What will my child have to do for the study?
• Your child’s information collected from the assessments will be used in the research study. It will be kept confidential.
• If your child’s class is chosen to use the online math activities, his or her information will be collected from the platform and used in the research study. It will be kept confidential.

Does my child have to participate in this study?
No. It is completely voluntary. There are no penalties if your child does not participate in this study. You also have the right to withdraw from the study if you change your mind later. There are no penalties for withdrawing early from the study.

Will my child's privacy be protected?
Yes. All identifying information we collect about your child will be kept confidential, will only be used for research purposes, and will never be shared outside the WestEd study team. After the end of the study, we will destroy records that contain personal information about your child.

Are there any risks to being in the study?
We do not believe there will be any additional risks to your child beyond those associated with normal school activities.

Are there any benefits?
What we learn from this study may help MathByExample improve its online math activities for children like yours.
