CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The theme for the 39th Annual Professional Development MAEOPP Conference is:
“The Cornerstones of Educational Opportunity: Accountability, Advocacy and Alliances”

Dates: November 3-6, 2013

Location: Columbus, Ohio - Hyatt Regency Columbus

The success of the professional development conference depends on the active participation and contribution of the membership in presenting sessions and workshops that are engaging and informative. We invite you to submit a proposal to share your expertise; successful programs and activities; and innovative practices and procedures with TRIO and other educational opportunity program colleagues.

The purpose of the workshop sessions is to increase the knowledge of and provide practical tools for the attendees to utilize and that support the work we do with students, staff, colleagues and within the community.

Prospective workshop presenters are encouraged to submit proposals on a variety of topics focused on the required services of our programs. The topics can include but are not limited to the following:

• Best Practices in Staff/Program Supervision

• Best Practices in Promoting Professional Development/Leadership

• Best Practices at Community and Technical Colleges

• Best Practices for Program Administrative Assistants

• Collaboration with Other Educational Associations

• Financial Literacy Programs for Program Participants

• Learning Assistance Programs and Model Practices in Student Programming

• Maximizing Your TRIO/EOP Budget

• Online Tutoring and Tutor Tracking

• Programming Strategies for Working with Non-Traditional Students

• Retention/Recruiting Tools

• Scholarship Information and Strategies for Program Participants

• Strategies for Working with Adult Learners

• Strategies for Working with Institutional Administration

• TRIO State Advocacy

• TRIO and Non-TRIO Collaboration

• Using Technology for Connections and Communication with Program Participants

• Writing for additional funding beyond your TRIO or EOP Grant

The due date for submitted proposals is: Monday, September 30, 2013.

Notification via e-mail regarding proposals will occur by: Monday, October 7, 2013.

All presenters are required to be registered for the conference. If you are not registered by October 7, 2013 you will be ineligible to present.

Professional competencies, practices and suggested tracks are identified in question 2.

Panel Presentations: Panel Presentations provide an opportunity to pull multiple representatives from various parts of our region together to share information and insight for a specific topic, area, or focus group.

Best/Promising Practices: Best/Promising Practices are sessions that allow peers to share strategies, programs, and interventions that have been successful on their particular campuses or within their organizations. Sessions should be of interest to colleagues who are collecting information about institutional or program practices and procedures.

Research Presentations: Research Presentation sessions are designed for the presentation of scholarly research conducted by individuals or groups on topics germane to TRIO or other college access and completion programs.

Round Tables: The Round Table sessions should be designed to provide the opportunity for in-depth discussion related to current events, developing trends or topics related to constituency issues.

Traditional Programs: These programs will be chosen for their relevance to and incorporation of the session tracks and descriptions noted in the next section below including professional competencies and practices from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), adapted to the work of TRIO.

Advising and Assisting Student Development: addresses the skills related to providing counseling and advising support, financial literacy information, direction, feedback referral and guidance to students. Examples of topics are: Learning Assistance Programs and Model Practices in Student Programming, Financial Literacy Programs for program participants, Online Tutoring and Tutor Tracking,Retention/Recruiting Tools, Using Technology for Connections and Communication with Program Participants

Providing Direct Service to Students: Strategies for Working with Adult Learners, Programming Strategies for Working with Non-Traditional Students, Scholarship Information and Strategies for Program Participants

Assessment, Evaluation, and Research: these sessions focus on the use, design, and ability to critique qualitative and quantitative evaluation materials within programs and organizations. They may also discuss the processes and the results obtained from program evaluations and how to implement the recommendations and conclusions.

Equity and Diversity: these sessions focus on the importance of attaining the skills to promote the awareness, knowledge and ability to create learning environments that incorporate the diverse views of people and to create a program or organizational culture that accepts and celebrates differences among people.

Human and Organizational Resources/Leadership: these sessions focus on developing the skills and knowledge in the selection, supervision, motivation and evaluation of staff. Suggested topic areas also include: conflict resolution, managing institutional politics, and effective administrative skills. Leadership related sessions address the knowledge and skills required to lead; as a positional leader or member of a team. Sessions that promote teamwork, strategic planning and advocacy fit this descriptor as well. Examples of topics are: Best Practices in Staff/Program Supervision and Professional Development/Leadership, Best Practices with Community and Technical Colleges, Best Practices for Program Administrative Assistants, Collaboration with Other Educational Associations, Strategies for Working with Institutional Administration, TRIO Collaborations with Other College Access and Completion Programs, and TRIO State, Regional and National Advocacy

Legislation and Regulations: these sessions are designed to review the legislation, regulations and responsibilities TRIO administrators work with in developing the policies and procedures within the programs. Sessions designed to discuss understanding the hierarchy of the policies and common compliance issues and challenges will receive priority consideration.

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of relevance to the conference theme, tracks, and anticipated interest to the audience. Submitting a proposal does not guarentee your proposal will be accepted.

Presenters will be notified of proposal acceptance no later than October 7, 2013.

A request for all presentation materials for accepted proposals will be sent. Please have all materials complete and prepared for submission by October 25, 2013. All materials will be sent to maeopp@gmail.com. You will recieve an e-mail reminder from me as this date approaches.
