Question Title

* 1. Name (First & Last)

Question Title

* 2. School Where You Coach

Question Title

* 3. Tennis is a unique game which depends on ethical behavior between coaches, players, and spectators. Please treat each other with courtesy and respect (for the game and for each other). Hold yourself and your team to high levels of integrity to ensure fair participation for all those involved in this great sport. If an official is not at one of your matches, should you, as a coach, "code" your player if you view them displaying egregious line calls and or unsportsmanlike acts?

Question Title

* 4. As a coach, your players and team are a direct reflection of your integrity and ethics.  Teach your team to uphold your high standards, and do not drop to the level of your opponents.  Teach your entire coaching staff of their responsibility to take action, if necessary, and make sure that you model amazing behavior.  Those unsportsmanlike tendancies from outside tournaments are not to be tolerated at the CHSAA level.  If poor sportsmanship is witnessed at the Regional or State level, the Regional Tournament Directors and the State Tournament Staff have the right to take action against your player (during AND after matches), if you do not.  If you experience poor sportsmanship during a match or tournament, what should you do?

Question Title

* 5. True or False - The CHSAA Tennis Commitee is very concerned about the Sportsmanship of our student-participants.  In response, CHSAA Sportsmanship

Question Title

* 6. The CHSAA has moved to align with the NFHS Calendar Schedule. All Spring Sports will be starting on the Monday of Week 24. The first practice will be February 25 and the first allowable scrimmage date will be February 28. In order to maintain a fair and consistent tryout process, schools may only begin formal challenge matches for team line-ups beginning on the first formal practice date. Players may be encouraged to practice in the off season, but any results may only be used as a guide. Once the season begins, can tweaks be made to your line-up as players improve and change abilities?

Question Title

* 7. According to the CHSAA Bylaws, all tennis players must have participated in 5 days of practice prior to playing in a scrimmage or match?  True or False?

Question Title

* 8. Per the ethics rule, official challenge matches must still occur and be formally documented by the coach. True or False, Coaches must be able to provide a ladder or challenge match results that verify that a student or doubles team is playing in a position #1, #2, #3 singles or #1, #2, #3, #4 doubles based on results of play?

Question Title

* 9. Challenge match formats should be more than a short set to 3 games, and should offer a fair and true opportunity for each player/team. Would a 10 point tiebreaker be equitable and fair for a challenge match?

Question Title

* 10. The doubles team may be any combination of squad members AFTER THE THREE BEST SINGLES TENNIS PLAYERS HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED. However, the #1 doubles team must be the squad's best doubles team, the #2 doubles team will be the second best doubles team, #3 doubles team will be the third best team, #4 will be the fourth best team, which represents the squad determined by play. After the singles players have been designated, you are permitted to have “doubles teams” challenge matches. All players are required to participate at a position at least 6 times prior to being allowed into Regionals. Must a doubles team play TOGETHER for 6 matches?

Question Title

* 11. Schools with incomplete teams cannot select the position of play that they wish to compete at for singles or doubles. (Example: A school with #1 and a #3 singles player must move the #3 singles player to the #2 position and complete all events in order #1, #2, and #3 singles.) The roster must be in order from #1 singles through #4 doubles. If you only have 6 players on your team, you will must fill your singles positions first and work your way down. You will have an alternate player. Can these players still compete at Regionals?

Question Title

* 12. If a position is unable to play for “3” consecutive matches, you as the coach may not substitute a player and must shift the line-up up in order to ensure that the best players/teams are playing in that position based upon challenge matches. Refer to the ethics rule outlined in the bulletin. Can a coach "wait and hold a spot" for a player to come back from injury - even if the parents/player/doctor is telling them that they are "almost" cleared?

Question Title

* 13. If there are extenuating circumstances, and the 6-match requirement cannot be met, what should a coach do?

Question Title

* 14. The CHSAA Coaching Protocol allows for off-court coaching during all point, game, and set breaks during a match, as long as the coaching does not interfere with play at any point. The purpose of coaching is to offer advice to the player and coaches shall not in any way distract or annoy the opposing player or surrounding players/teams. If a coach in any way interferes with play or distracts an opposing player at any time, the coach shall receive a direct warning from the Referee or Official and the point shall be replayed (when USTA officials are not around, the opposing coach or tournament director may request a replay). For any subsequent violation, the coach's player, on the court where the violation occurred, shall be assessed a point penalty (by the offended coach or the tournament director). Penalties for coaching are not treated as part of the USTA Point Penalty System, and they do not accumulate. Coaching is only permitted by the head coach and any registered and or contracted coaches through their respective school. No parents may coach at any time during the match unless they are coaches under contract with their school. Coaching is only permitted outside the fence perimeter. On an empty adjacent court, coaches may stand at the doubles sideline on the same side as their own player. **Coaches may now coach after the first game of the set, but per Rule 29 in Friend At Court, this is a continuous changeover, and the 90-sec rule for changeovers does not apply. Coaches must walk with their player(s) as they change to the other side of the court and they cannot delay the second game. Does a coach HAVE to coach their player after every point or changeover?

Question Title

* 15. Regional Tournaments are for ALL players and teams across the state - regardless of your record for the season. 3A & 4A Regionals are predetermined based on geography, and 5A Regionals are created based upon a waterfall system and league finish. 5A league matches MUST be completed by Thursday, April 25th. Regardless of weather, or cancelled matches, all 5A league results need to be reported by your league tennis AD to the CHSAA office by Friday, April 26th at 9:00 am. According to the CHSAA rules and calendar, Wednesday, May 1st will be the earliest Regionals may begin, and Saturday, May 4th will be the last day Regionals can occur (pending weather). The CHSAA Tennis Committee stongly recommends that all Regional Hosts contract/hire a tournament director that is well versed in CHSAA Regional Rules.  Can Regional Hosts split their court, tournament director and officials' expenses with the participating schools?

Question Title

* 16. The CHSAA has a new mandatory Regional format (pending weather or approval for unusual circumstances). Players may play up to three times per day. For Regions with less than 5 teams, the tournament can be completed in 1 day. Regions with 5 or more teams need 2 days. ALL FIRST ROUND PLAYBACK MATCHES MUST BE SCHEDULED FOR THE FIRST DAY. For all Finals Day, the tournament director should place each position, finals and playback, on at the same time as courts allow. For instance, #1 singles finals will play at the same time as #1 singles playback finals; #2 singles finals at the same time as #2 singles playback finals, and so on based on number of courts available. This is to allow for equity in rest periods for all players if there would be a playback for state. Immediately following the finals and playback finals, there will be a minimum 30-minute rest prior to any necessary state challenge matches, as needed. All coaches and athletic directors should be aware that court costs and officials costs can and should be split evenly between the teams involved. If there is terrible weather, can this "ideal" schedule be changed?

Question Title

* 17. Proper tennis attire will be mandatory for your team. The tennis uniform should be tennis shorts or the tennis team uniform approved by the school. All clothing should be appropriate and approved for tennis. School issued uniforms or attire identifying your school is preferred. Hats are acceptable. One color headbands are acceptable. Sleeveless shirts manufactured exclusively for tennis attire are acceptable. Unacceptable attire is: jeans, cut-off jeans, jams, attire past the knee, undergarments hanging below shorts, tobacco/alcoholic advertisements and the like. Bandannas are not acceptable. Bare mid-rifts, cutoff sleeveless or cutoff muscle shirts are not permitted. Do your doubles teams have to be matching with regards to attire?

Question Title

* 18. Students who are academically ineligible after the first semester have the ability to regain on the Monday of Week 36 (March 4).  If these students are eligible on this day, are they fully eligible to participate for the remainder of the season?

Question Title

* 19. The CHSAA has a new Transfer Bylaw. Bylaw 1800.1 states that: A student who establishes his/her high school eligibility at a member school and subsequently transfers, will be ineligible for varsity competition for 365 days from the date of their transfer, in the sports they participated in during the last 365 days (pending a bona fide move). Clarifying Statement: the definition of transfer shall be any change of schools by a student participant for academic or participatory reasons. This includes all students who have established their eligibility at: 1) the school they are enrolled in, 2) a school they are playing for because their school of enrollment did not offer that activity and they are participating under state statute, or 3) the student is a home-based student and has established his/her athletic eligibility under state statute. The 50% (summer) and mid-year bylaws have been eliminated. Please make sure to speak with your athletic director if new students show up to your practice. If parents or players approach you about transferring to your school, please direct ALL inquiries to your athletic director to eliminate any fears or allegations of recruiting. Can students who transfer schools still compete on your JV team?
