Prize Challenge!: Three college students who attend both workshops and 3D CAD the best representation of the contest rules will be awarded $50 gift cards. If Wednesday’s class interferes with your course schedule, please contact Beth Hanning (partners@stemwerx.org). We will make some concessions only if you make arrangements ahead of time.
Project Information: College students will use the paper sketches with measurements of race cars provided on Friday as a foundation to create 3D CAD models. These CAD models will be 3D printed and used in a wind tunnel testing activity at ROBOTICON in Tampa on September 29 & 30th. This is one segment of a pilot program for the Andretti FAST TRACK experience. It’s important to know that this is not a SOLIDWORKS course, but will focus on engineering design. Students attending will need to already be proficient with SOLIDWORKS.
What: Engineering Design Workshop: Aerodynamics of Race Cars Who: UWF students proficient at SolidWorks Where: Sea3D Additive Manufacturing Lab / Transportation Museum, 201 East Zaragoza Street, Pensacola Cost: Free! Needed: Please bring your own laptop with SOLIDWORKS or any other CAD program that you are comfortable using. If you don’t have a laptop with SOLIDWORKS, please let me know when you register. We’ll attempt to provide one or you will be able to complete the CAD portion of the class at a later time.
Guest Speaker: Ken Blackburn, Scientist, Author and former Guinness Book World Record holder of Longest Sustained Paper Airplane Flight
When/Agenda: Day 1 – Friday, September 14 - 8:30 am – 11:30 am *Intro to race car aerodynamic features
*Guest Speaker *Review of existing race car designs and aerodynamics features *Project requirements and constraints *Revisions discussion *3D CAD modeling project start
(Students can finish work on the CAD model in between workshop days.) Day 2 – Wednesday, September 19, 9:00 – 12:00 pm
*Progress discussion *Wind tunnel test predictions *Continuation of 3D CAD modeling project *3D print race car models
Learning Objective: Students will learn about the aerodynamics features of race cars and the process of Engineering Design. Students will create a 3D CAD model for 3D printing.
Skill Level: This workshop will focus on the design process. For this workshop, students should already be proficient using SolidWorks and using the 3D printers at the Sea3D lab.
Portfolio: We'd love to see your previous work! If you have an online portfolio or images or CAD models you've created that you would like to share, please email the link to partners@stemwerx.org.
Photo Release: By registering for this survey, you agree that you would love to be included in photos or videos of our workshop.
