Level 1: Emerging Instructional Design Skills
Experience: New to instructional design, limited experience developing courses or training materials for in-person or online formats.
Course Development: Basic understanding of structuring content for one format, often relies on guidance to adapt for in-person or virtual delivery. May use templates or existing materials.
Technology & Tools: Familiar with basic tools like PowerPoint and beginner-level experience with eLearning platforms or virtual meeting software (e.g., Zoom, Teams).
Assessment & Evaluation: Beginning to explore how to design assessments tailored to the delivery format (e.g., quizzes for online vs. interactive activities for in-person).
Collaboration & Feedback: Open to receiving feedback from colleagues and supervisors. Beginning to understand the value of student feedback but has limited experience eliciting or applying it effectively.
Level 2: Proficient Instructional Design Skills
Experience: Several years of teaching and instructional design experience with confidence designing for both in-person and online formats.
Course Development: Independently designs and structures training materials tailored to the strengths and limitations of each delivery format. Applies instructional design principles like Bloom's Taxonomy to meet diverse learning objectives and styles.
Technology & Tools: Proficient with tools for both in-person and online delivery, such as eLearning platforms, LMS, and multimedia tools for interactive or hybrid learning.
Assessment & Evaluation: Designs effective assessments for both formats (e.g., group discussions for in-person, simulations for online) and evaluates their impact on learning outcomes.
Collaboration & Feedback: Actively seeks feedback from students and colleagues. Can apply feedback to make targeted improvements to course content and delivery.
Level 3: Advanced Instructional Design Skills
Experience: Extensive experience in instructional design, excelling in creating and delivering engaging courses in both in-person and online settings.
Course Development: Expert in designing comprehensive training programs tailored to various delivery formats. Incorporates advanced methodologies (e.g., ADDIE, SAM, Bloom's Taxonomy) to create seamless experiences across in-person, online, and hybrid formats.
Technology & Tools: Mastery of instructional design software, eLearning platforms, and virtual learning tools. Effectively integrates technology to enhance both in-person and online delivery.
Assessment & Evaluation: Creates innovative assessments specific to each format (e.g., live role-playing for in-person, gamified modules for online) and uses data-driven insights to optimize outcomes.
Collaboration & Feedback: Demonstrates a strong ability to elicit meaningful student feedback and integrate it into course refinements to enhance learning outcomes and the overall training experience.
