Introduction
As set out in the
Laurentian University Strategic Plan, we launched last year a consultative process to re-imagine our varsity brand. Engaging closely with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the broader Sudbury community, the purpose of the project was to determine how we can best reflect our Northern values and the University’s bilingual and tricultural mandate.
We have now completed the first phase of this process. The next phase involves exploring a brand identity that best reflects our values and mandate while enhancing our student and varsity athlete experience.
The broader University community is invited to submit suggestions on varsity team name/university moniker, visual representation, mascot, cheer, and other experiential components that they feel capture the essence and spirit of who we are as a University community. These ideas can include best practices experienced elsewhere or brand new ideas you wish us to explore. All options are open, from small changes to significant ones.
Please take the time to submit your ideas and suggestions, keeping in mind the following reference points:
Fit as a unifying concept that reflects the institution’s values;
- Alignment with the Laurentian’s bilingual and tricultural mandate (i.e., embracing Indigenous, Francophone, and Anglophone perspectives);
- Is culturally respectful, and works (either seamlessly or via translation) in French and the local Indigenous languages (i.e., Anishinaabemowin);
- Retains Laurentian’s existing official colours – blue and gold – for continuity and to honour the legacy; and
- Is conceived as part of a full fan experience, making it chantable, cheer-able, and ready to fit into unique, enduring Laurentian traditions.
We will be collecting suggestions until September 21, 2025. As we celebrate our 65th anniversary this year, it is a fitting time for us to reflect on our history and also reimagine our future. This project is part of that reflection, and we look forward to hearing the community’s suggestions.
Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations will be made to the University’s leadership for consideration and further development.
