* 17. DC-CAP Kennedy Center Gala for the Performing Arts (1) Eligibility Criteria, (2) Application Requirements, (3) Scholarship Awards, (4) Scoring Process, (5) Auditions and Rehearsals

I. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Each applicant:

1. Must attend a DC Public & Public Charter High School and have an interest in dance, instrumental or vocal music.

2. Must be willing to participate and demonstrate talent during the audition.

3. The 1st place winner of any previous DC-CAP Gala Talent Competition is ineligible to apply.

4. Must meet a 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point (GPA) requirement

II. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Each application packet must contain the following:

1. Official/certified copy of current transcript indicating a minimum GPA of 2.0 or better;

2. One-page typed essay that answers: What have you learned and what obstacles have you overcome as you have traveled along your path to attend college? And, how do you think participating in DC-CAPital Stars and sharing your art and talent is/will help prepare you to be a successful college student? The essay must be submitted through online application when you submit your application or emailed to dccapgala@dccap.org before the deadline); PLEASE NOTE: If you obtain semi-finalist status your essay will be posted on the DC-CAP Gala website.

3. Each applicant must submit a completed and signed DC-CAP Student Release Form. All students under the age of 18 are required to have their parent or guardian to sign the Student Release Form in order to participate in the DC-CAP Gala auditions, rehearsals, or Kennedy Center performances. Please see your DC-CAP Advisor for the Release Form.

4. All application requirements 1, 2, & 3 (listed above) must be submitted together as a complete package for review.

5. All applications and supporting documents must be received at DC-CAP by 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 30, 2017. Once you select the submit button your application has been received.

* 18. III. SCORING PROCESS

1. Audition Stage: All students who meet the eligibility criteria will be scheduled for an audition where they will be evaluated by a team of independent professional vocalists, dancers, musicians & educators from the metropolitan area.

2. Semi-finalist Stage: 40 students will be selected as semi-finalists by a team of independent professional vocalists, dancers, musicians & educators from the metropolitan area. The judge’s scores are based on stage presence, technique, presentation, and overall performance. A maximum of 10 semi-finalists will be selected from an individual DC Public or Public Charter High School.

**All semi-finalists that do not advance to the finalist stage are welcomed and encouraged to practice and participate in the opening and closing performance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, February 28th. Each participant will receive a $250 stipend for their participation.

3. Finalist Stage: Based on the judge’s scores and on-line voting 10 students will advance to the finalist phase to compete for a $10,000 scholarship for college.

4. Winners – Top Three: The top three winners will be chosen by the celebrity judges and live audience voting.

IV. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

1. Awards include 1st Place - $10,000, 2nd Place - $6,000, 3rd Place - $4,000, and Honorable Mention - $2,000. Each award is disbursed over the first two years of college.

2. Scholarship checks will be sent to the institutions in which the award recipient is enrolled full-time beginning the fall term of their freshmen year in college.

* 19. V. AUDITIONS & REHEARSALS

1. All students that submit a completed application and meet the eligibility requirements will be scheduled for an audition.

2. Forty students will advance to the semi-finalist stage.

3. All 40 semi-finalists are required to attend the MANDATORY Semi-Finalists Coaching Session/Rehearsal prior to taping.

4. The live auditions will be held at a designated location, To Be Announced (TBA). The audition is limited to 3 minutes. Each semi-finalist performance will be taped and posted onto the DC-CAP Gala Website to be reviewed by a worldwide audience.

5. All semi-finalists are required to take a head shot (5”x 7”) photograph at the recorded audition. The photograph will be posted on the DC-CAP Gala website for the on-line voting period.

6. All semi-finalists (40) and finalists (10) are required to attend ALL rehearsals. If you are encountering any issues with the schedule have any concerns, please notify the Gala Coordinator immediately.
