National Survey - Open from July 2015 to September 2016

The Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) is inviting all interested Australians to participate in our survey,
to share information about:

(1) initiatives and projects you and your community are working on, to reduce consumption
and live within your ecological limits, (these can be current projects or those completed in the past five years) and
(2) what role you think law and regulation should play in supporting collective action
to reduce consumption

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN THIS SURVEY?

Anyone who has worked collectively with other people to reduce consumption.  By ‘working collectively’ we mean anyone who has worked as part of a small or large group, formal or informal. This might be people from local catchment management groups, Transition Town projects, neighbourhood groups, formal environmental organisations, schools or other groups.

While we’re 100% in support of individual action to reduce consumption, the specific focus of this survey – and our “Let’s Talk About Consumption” publication and workshop series - is to find out about (and share with others) as many stories as possible about collective action.

WHY IS AELA CONDUCTING THIS SURVEY?

AELA’s mission is to promote the understanding and implementation of Earth centred law and governance.  One of the ways we’re working towards this mission is by focusing on law and governance for living within our ecological limits. Our starting point is to produce a range of accessible publications and fact sheets, aimed at sharing information among civil society about successful collective efforts to reduce consumption in Australia. We’re also keen to collate people’s suggestions about how the legal system can be changed to better support collective and societal efforts to reduce consumption. We’ll be using the information gathered through this survey, to inform our law reform work and contribute to the transformation of law and governance in Australia.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY 'CONSUMPTION'?

By ‘consumption’ we mean taking or using up natural resources, either in their original ‘natural’ state or once those resources have been turned into products – for example, we include the consumption of water, electricity, land, plants, animals, food and consumer products.

WHAT WILL AELA DO WITH THE INFORMATION GATHERED BY THIS SURVEY?

The information you provide in this survey will be analysed by AELA project officers, and wherever possible, included in our national publication series that we’ll begin preparing in early 2016.

Your information will be made publicly available – so please only share information that you’re happy to make public. If we need to clarify any details or get further information from you, we’ll contact you via any of the contact details you provide to us.
