GRDC funded - Southern Dirt Inc Legume Cropping Challenge

Southern Dirt has secured GRDC funding for a new two-year Legume Cropping Challenge, supporting growers to improve lupin and faba bean performance and profitability through practical benchmarking, seasonal discussion, and peer learning.

The project will run across the 2026 and 2027 growing seasons and will include:

3 workshops (one each year plus final results session)
optional field walks (season dependent)
commodity-specific benchmarking (lupins compared with lupins, fabas with fabas)
independent analysis by the Farm Optimisation Group
a challenge-style format with awards for yield and profit improvement
Participants will be asked to provide basic crop management and input data (sowing, nutrition, chemical costs, yield and gross margin) across both seasons. Yield will be compared on a relative basis, not absolute yield.
