Maternal Health Literacy

Maternal health literacy refers to the ability of mothers to access, understand, appraise, and apply information for the mother and child health care needs during pregnancy, at childbirth and in the postpartum period. Generally, the information available is very generic. Evidence suggests specific linguistic learning needs of hapū māmā that acknowledge their cultural content is often overlooked. As well, little attention is given to diverse ethnic communities, including refugees and pregnant women with disabilities.

The Ministry of Health consumer-facing parenting and pregnancy information webpages provides information to assist pregnant women to access, understand and appraise their midwifery care. We are interested in your views and invite you to respond to this survey.
