Longfellow Volunteer Opportunities 2018-19

Over the course of the year, there will be many opportunities to volunteer for Longfellow events and activities or to create new traditions. No matter what time you have to give, your contributions are needed and appreciated.

When the community engages to support the students, staff and one another in making Longfellow a strong and thriving center, we all benefit.

Run for Longfellow: One of the most fun events of the year - donate cups, fill water, cut oranges, DJ music, run with kids, chaperone to Bogert Park, or help with the planning pre-event.

Snacks for front office: we need snacks donated periodically that are available in the front office to all kids.

Community Lynx Nights: We are focused on creating a safe and nurturing community within and around our school. We will be planning quarterly fun and educational evening events at Longfellow. We will need help planning the events, providing childcare, setting up, etc.

Monthly Friday coffee for parents: Do you love coffee? Help with set-up, clean-up, coffee making, and more at our monthly morning coffee for parents. This is a new event and we are looking for people to take it on and make it their own, though if you'd just like to help on occasion, that is great too. We meet the 2nd Friday of each month, in front of the school (weather permitting).

Holiday Performance Committee: We would love a group of parents to work with the music teachers to plan for the evening of the holiday performance - planning inclusive decorations and other special touches, decorating the auditorium, planning childcare assistance for the classes, managing the flow of parents picking up kids post-performance, etc.

Teacher/Staff appreciation: help make our Longfellow staff feel like the rock stars they are for teacher appreciation week and beyond - planning daily events, arranging for treats, cooking, etc.

Crossing Guard: With our new crosswalk design, we'll be needing helpers to get our kids to school and home safely.

Front office help: Help Ms. Karen manage front office tasks - laminating, occasional envelope stuffing, etc.

Attend LPA meetings: Hear the latest news from Principal McClellan & other guest speakers, and learn about upcoming events from the Longfellow Parents Association. Meets the second Tuesday of every month at noon in the library.

LPA board: help us build the community and support our Longfellow staff and students to provide enrichment and connection.

Bike/walk to school day: This is an old event that we'd like to bring back. Let us know if you are interested in helping us plan and orchestrate a bike/walk to school day.

Longfellow Carnival: An elementary school defining event! Help with planning, volunteer to set-up or run a game room, help give out prizes...

STEM Expo: a wonderful science, technology, engineering and problem solving filled evening where we get to see the products of the hard work of Longfellow kids and learn a lot. Help with planning, evening of set-up or clean-up, project judging, etc.

World Language Program

Yearbook: take and gather pictures, create the layout and design, manage the purchasing and production, etc.

Artworks: we will share contact information with Alyssa Smith who runs this amazing, multi-faceted event that raises funds for the art program at Longfellow. Bring your creative and organizational skills to bear and support the arts at Longfellow.

Artworks co-chair: this program is a critical element of the fabric of our school that engages the broader community deeply. It is a fun and rewarding program. Having two people managing the many important pieces would be great - many hands make lighter work.

Book fair: help set up and take down the annual book fair, take money from book purchases during open fair time (times available both before and after school.)
