MN Math Leaders Networking sessions are sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and MN Math Leaders, a committee of the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). All sessions are from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at MDE in Conference Center B. The topic for this year is coaching, with a focus on the book Mathematics Coaching and Collaboration in a PLC at Work, (Kanold, et al., 2018).

Target Audience: Administrators and teacher leaders who are passionate about leading change in mathematics education for all students. The networking meetings are open to anyone who is in a department or team, school, or district leadership position and are designed for leaders to give and receive support. Note: Sessions are free, but registration is required.

The November 15th session will be facilitated by Barb Everhart. Barb is currently a Math Specialist at Heritage E-STEM Magnet School, and she is also an education consultant and Empowerment Coach.

The Coach, The Novice and The Expert:  This session will model a variety of community-building activities and discussion protocols to create safe space within a conversation so all voices are valued and heard. The goals for the session are for participants to: reflect on their current coaching strategy; identify and explore other coaching strategies from Tim Kanold and Elena Aguilar; listen to learn; be reflective and respond constructively and non-defensively; recognize dissonance between emotions and behaviors; and problem solve. Both individual reflections and group discussions will be used to have participants delve deep into the ideas of coaching and its impact on community and learning in mathematics classrooms.
