In 1996, ANAC supported the creation of a separate corporation, the HIV/AIDS Nursing Certification Board (HANCB). HANCB is a nonprofit professional organization whose mission is to improve the quality of HIV nursing care and prevention, promote the competency of nurses caring for persons with HIV, and recognize professional achievement through a certification and recertification process.
The first examination was administered in October 1996 at the ANAC conference in Chicago. Nearly 200 candidates successfully passed the proctored examination and were entitled to use the ACRN credential (AIDS Certified Registered Nurse) for four (4) years.
