City of Salmon Residents Water Service Line Survey Form

Information about the survey & Instructions to complete the survey

Information about the water line survey:
New Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, require the City of Salmon to compile a water service line material type inventory for all service lines connected to The City of Salmon Water System. Your help is required to identify the material type of the water service line as it enters your home or business. The water service line inventory is a very important component in order for the City of Salmon to demonstrate compliance with the new EPA regulation.
For more information about this new EPA regulation please visit the attached EPA website link.
Items needed to complete the survey:
Flathead screwdriver or similar metal tool and a small magnet
Instructions to complete the survey:
First, locate where the water service line is coming into the building. You will typically find the service line in a basement, crawl space, mechanical room, or in a wall panel. The pipe is generally between 3/4 inch and 2 inches in diameter, but maybe larger.
Identify a test area on the pipe near where the pipe enters the building. If the pipe is covered or wrapped, expose a small area on the pipe.
If the pipe is metal, use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently scratch through any corrosion that may have built up on the outside of the pipe.
-If the scraped area is shiny and silver, your service line is likely lead. A magnet will not stick to a lead pipe.
-If the scraped area is copper in color, similar to a penny, the service line is copper. A magnet will not stick to a copper pipe.
-If the scraped area is brass in color, similar to that of a trumpet, the service line is brass. A magnet will slightly stick to brass.
-If the scraped area remains a dull gray, and a magnet sticks to the surface, your service line is likely galvanized steel.
-The service line may be plastic or some other type of material. Common colors of plastic pipe include: white, black, and blue.
