The City of Asheville is exploring the feasibility of an expansion of the City of Asheville Youth Leadership Academy (CAYLA) for the 2017 summer. We are seeking your input through a brief survey.

CAYLA recruits, trains and places local high school students at meaningful summer jobs with the City and with participating agencies, in addition to providing weekly day-long workshops on financial literacy, leadership, career exploration and 21st Century job skills. CAYLA engages its students throughout the school year by offering classroom-based enrichment activities, plus individualized assistance with college applications and scholarship research. The majority of CAYLA students are the first in their families to attend college.

Program Specifics

Summer Internships
  • CAYLA students are placed at summer internships with City and County departments and with local businesses and nonprofits. Every effort is made to align students’ interests and aptitudes with specific host sites.
  • Schedule: Mondays through Thursdays, 6 hours per day for a total of approximately 24 hours (specific times will depend on each job site). Program is currently 8 weeks in duration, including an Orientation Week.
  • Students earn $12.50/hour and are paid by the City of Asheville. As seasonal/temp employees, the CAYLA students are covered by the City’s insurance and workers comp policies.
In order to gage employers’ interest in serving as a partnering internship site, we kindly request the following information. Please complete this survey prior to Nov. 9.  Mountain Area Workforce Board is assisting with the survey.  Results will be received by the Mountain Area Workforce Board and distributed to Erika Germer.  Company information will not be used for other purposes.

With appreciation,
