GASBHA George W. Brumley Jr. Award for Excellence in School-Based Health Centers

Named after Dr. George William Brumley Jr., physician, academician, scientist, and philanthropist, who championed the creation of a system of care aimed at maximizing the potential for children living in under resourced communities, the Brumley Award recognizes individuals and organizations making exceptional strides in improving access to healthcare and academic achievement through school-based health centers. In 1994, Dr. Brumley and his colleague, Dr. Veda Johnson, opened the first school-based health center (SBHC) in Georgia at Whitefoord Elementary School in Atlanta. The Whitefoord Elementary SBHC increased access to medical, dental and mental health care for students living in the Edgewood community of Atlanta, Georgia. This groundbreaking approach collaborated with the school system to ensure that students were healthy, present, validated and connected to the school and had the will to learn. The Brumley Award honors the commitment of those who strive toward fulfilling this mission.

Please make a nomination for the individual and/or organization that you believe deserves to be celebrated for their contribution to the success of SBHCs in Georgia.
