Pledge 1: I will not take any domestic flights during the pledge period

A return flight from London to Edinburgh produces more than 300kg of CO2e. A return rail journey from London to Edinburgh produces approximately 22kg of CO2e, a difference of 278kg of CO2e. (ScotRail Carbon Calculator)

Pledge 2: I will not use any takeaway/single use cups over the course of the pledge period

Every year the UK population throws away more than 2.5 billion single use coffee cups. (BBC)

All those who sign up for this pledge are eligible for a 10% discount on a Lincoln keep-cup purchase

Pledge 3: I will try to buy second hand clothes instead of new ones, wherever possible.

If everyone in the worlds’ major cities only purchased 8 new items of clothing a year it could reduce carbon emissions associated with the fashion industry by 37% (Future of Urban Consumption in a 1.5 degrees Celsius World (The Future of Urban Consumption in a 1.5°C World - Arup) (2019)

Pledge 4: I will not buy any plastic bags from supermarkets during the pledge period

Although the use of single use plastic bags in the UK has dramatically reduced since the introduction of the charge, In the 2022-23 financial year supermarkets still supplied 133 million single-use plastic bags. (Government UK press release) (Plastic bag use falls by more than 98% after charge introduction - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Pledge 5: I will eat a vegetarian lunch and a vegetarian evening meal at least one day per week over the course of the pledge period

Just opting for 1 out of 7 days fully vegetarian in a week could save an estimated 4kg per week amounting to 200kg of CO2 per year (Source BBC website https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220429-the-climate-benefits-of-veganism-and-vegetarianism)
