Location: Alumni House, University at Albany

Each session of the 2019-2020 Leadership Symposium is designed to be interactive, practical and to create a community of educational leaders. Participants will learn from colleagues and guest speakers, collaborate in workshop activities aimed at stimulating reflection and discussion, and walk away with suggestions and solutions to implement and share with their school communities.

Session I: Building the Foundation - September 24, 2019
Focus: Standard 1 - Mission, Vision, and Core Values
            Standard 2 - Ethics and Professional Norms
Goal: Develop a deeper understanding of the significance of mission and vision, and how to focus the efforts of all members of the school community on the success of each student.
Outcomes:
• Learn from practitioners the process of developing mission and vision statements.
• Make your vision come alive: a model for how to work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
 
Session II: Developing Leadership Capacity - October 28, 2019
Focus: Standard 6 - Professional Capacity of School Personnel
            Standard 7 - Professional Community for Teachers and Staff
Goal: Create a culture that establishes a standard for selecting, supporting and sustaining all school members as leaders in their work with students.
Outcomes:
• Align the hiring process to your district’s mission and vision.
• Talent management: how to maximize the assets of your staff.

Session III: Creating Practical Systems for Action - November 19, 2019
Focus: Standard 4 - Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
            Standard 10 - School Improvement
Goal: Implement a collaborative school improvement process focused on the academic and social-emotional needs of all students.
Outcomes:
• Learn from teams that have successfully implemented school improvement plans.

Session IV: Cultivating the Community - January 14, 2020
Focus: Standard 3 - Equity and Cultural Responsiveness
            Standard 9 - Operations and Management
Goal: Explore best practices in equity and cultural responsiveness in all areas of learning and management.
Outcomes:
• Raise your awareness of structural inequities in your school district.
• Identify possible strategies to address systemic inequities.

Session V: Sustaining the Community - February 4, 2020
Focus: Standard 5 - Community of Care and Support for Students
            Standard 8 - Meaningful Engagement of Families and Community
Goal: Engage families, students and the community in developing a caring, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Outcomes:
• Using student and parent survey results to drive your school plans.
• Learn how social media can be used to communicate and engage families and community.
