Business Start-Up Grant

Les Dames d'Escoffier Philadelphia will award two grants to female business owners or new-business developers in the greater Philadelphia area. The business or development plan must be in a food, beverage or hospitality related industry.
 
The first grant is $2500 for development of a business plan for a new enterprise. The proceeds are to be used for essential services for startup, such as obtaining a Tax ID, setting up a LLC or other business structure, paying for a website, etc. The second grant is $7500 to enable business expansion, add value and/or services, or improve an established (one-year-plus) food, beverage or hospitality-focused business.
 
This application questionnaire is for the first grant, the business-plan development award. 

To be eligible for consideration for this grant, the applicant must be a woman living in the greater Philadelphia region who is developing a business plan for a new business in food, beverage or hospitality. Not available to current LDEI members.

Applicants must supply LDEI Philadelphia with the following materials:
 
A resume or a description of your relevant food/beverage industry education
 
An essay: (not to exceed 1000 words): Tell your story, describing your career path and business, your passion and goals, your reason for wishing to start a food-related business, and your goals for the business.
 
A completed and detailed business plan that you consider ready for use for loan applications, legal representation, and business start-up. It must include mission, goals, and financial needs of the business.
 
A three-to-five-minute video that explains your business idea and plan, explains its value and serves to sell your idea and you – the classic ‘elevator pitch’.
 
References: one professional and one personal reference, complete with contact information and length of acquaintance.
 
The winner will receive:
$2500 to be used for business start-up costs (obtaining a tax ID, setting up a LLC or similar legal business structure, paying for website construction, etc. The grant cannot be used for salaries, payroll, rent, equipment, tools, uniforms, office equipment, travel expenses or other physical improvements to a business). Grant recipients are responsible for arranging and initially paying for their business start-up costs. Reimbursements will be made promptly upon receiving proof of payment of expenses relating to the grant.
 
A one-year provisional membership to the LDEI Philadelphia Chapter.
 
25 hours of business mentoring from LDEI members with experience related to the recipient’s business plans and goals. The mentoring will be divided amongst five members who will each provide at least five hours of mentoring time within a defined time period. 
 
Recipients will be expected to provide six-month and one-year reports chronicling the start-up and first-year efforts, successes and needs.
 
Recipients will also be asked to provide a high-resolution digital business logo/representative photo, take part in a phone interview for publicity purposes, attend an LDEI Philadelphia chapter event to speak about the proposed business, announce the award on any social media used by the recipient, and agree to act as a mentor at some time in the future, to a recipient of a future grant.

The Les Dames Scholarship committee asks that all video applications are submitted using YouTube. 

If you are using the YouTube app on your phone:
1. Record your scholarship video application using your phone’s video capability that is located in your
camera app.
2. Open the YouTube app and create an account (if you do not already have an existing YouTube account).
3. Select the “(+)” symbol at the bottom of the screen.
4. Select “Upload a Video”. Allow YouTube to access your photos/videos on your phone, and select the video you recorded for the scholarship application.
5. After you select your desired video, you will be given the option to crop the video, add music, text, filters etc.
6. Once you have edited the video to your liking, you will be given the option to give the video a Title.
Please Title the video with your “First and Last Name - Les Dames Scholarship Application”.
7. You may add a description to the video, but it is not mandatory.
8. Please set the “Visibility” of the video to Private.
9. It is not necessary to choose any options under the “Select Audience” menu.
10. Press “Upload Video” at the bottom of the screen.
11. The video will be uploaded to your YouTube library. Depending on the length of your video, this may take up to 10 minutes.
12. At the bottom of your screen, select “Library” and then select “Your videos”. This will take you to your uploaded video.
13. Press on the video you have uploaded.
14. Once the video you selected appears, there will be an arrow symbol with the word “Share”. Press “Share” and select “Copy Link”.
15. Paste the video link into the body comment box below.

If you are downloading your video to YouTube from your computer:
1. Go to www.YouTube.com
2. Create a YouTube account (if you do not already have an existing account).
3. At the top right of your computer screen click on the Camera symbol with a “+” sign in the middle of it.
4. Select “Upload Video” from the drop-down menu.
5. At this point you may select a video file that you already have on your computer.
6. Select the video file you wish to use for your application.
7. Once you have selected your video, a window will appear that will ask you for more details.
8. We ask that the “Title” of your video be your “First and Last Name – Les Dames Scholarship Application”.
9. In the same window, may also add a description, thumbnail and playlist to your video, but those are not
mandatory.
10. It is required that you select an option for your Audience. “Yes, it’s made for kids” or “No, it’s not made
for kids. Select whichever you feel appropriate.
11. On the two next screen titled “Video Elements” and “Checks”, do not select anything and press “Next” in the bottom right corner.
12. On the last screen titled “Visibility” select Private and then press “Save”.
13. Once you have saved your video you will be able to find it on your “Channel Content” page in your YouTube account.
14. Find the video you would like to use for your scholarship application on your “Channel Content” page, and press the “three vertical dots”. A drop-down menu will appear, select “Get Shareable Link”. Once you have selected this option, a link should be copied.
