Introduction to the survey
Wood Bison is currently listed as Threatened in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The species was reassessed by the NWT Species at Risk Committee in April 2026 using information based in Indigenous knowledge, community knowledge and science. The Committee recommended Wood Bison continue to be listed as Threatened based on their relatively small and declining population, the fact that wood bison in the NWT are restricted to three disjunct areas, and their vulnerability to threats including vehicle collisions and disease (bovine brucellosis, bovine tuberculosis, and anthrax).
‘Threatened’ means a species is likely to become Endangered if nothing is done to address the factors putting it at risk.

The objective of this survey is to gather public feedback on the proposal to extend the listing of Wood Bison as a Threatened species in the NWT.
Comments are due by November 15, 2026.
