2.Informed Consent

Who is conducting this study?
James Rommens, a doctoral student at California Southern University. Faculty advisor is Dr. Robert Cale Hall, DBA, Argosy University.
Who can take part?
You are invited to participate in a research study. To participate, you must have been the project manager of a completed Information Technology (IT) project which was completed no more than two years ago. Additionally, you must have been the sole project manager on that project, and you must have been based in the United States during the entire time of the project. IT projects include, but are not limited to, software development, web development, mobile application development, cybersecurity, data management and analytics, digital transformation, cloud migration, infrastructure upgrade and improvement, and network configuration projects. Your consent is being sought for participation in this research study. Your participation in this study is totally voluntary.
Briefly, what is this research about?
This research seeks to understand the influence of the project manager’s leadership style, level of emotional intelligence, and possession of the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification on U.S.-based, IT project outcomes. The survey will ask specific questions about these influences on a specific completed IT project of your choice. The desired outcome of this research study is a better understanding of individual factors that may influence future IT projects’ success.
What is the purpose of this study? (Why would you want to participate?)
This study will research the relationship between the leadership style and level of emotional intelligence of project managers on IT projects in the U.S. Your participation will help add to the body of knowledge within project management as well as help future projects be more successful.
What will you be expected to do?
If you agree to take part in this study, not counting the first question on agreeing to proceed, you will be asked to respond to a set of 27 questions regarding your demographics, leadership style, emotional intelligence level, and assessment of your selected project’s success. The total time to complete the online survey is approximately five minutes.
What are the risks to you?
You might face some risks from being in this study. They include mental or emotional health issues as you recall specific aspects of your selected projects. This is expected to be minimal as the survey questions do not probe into specifics of the selected project. Additionally, no personally identifiable information will be captured so your anonymity is guaranteed.
What are the benefits to you?
Although you may not directly benefit from being in this study, your responses will contribute to the body of scholarly knowledge within project management and may contribute to understanding factors that may contribute to future project success. You may benefit from being in this study because you may learn more about your own leadership style and level of emotional intelligence through your own responses, reflection and knowledge as you complete the survey.
Do you have to participate?
Participating in this study is voluntary. Even if you decide to be part of the study now, you may change your mind and stop at any time. You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to answer.
What are your options if you do not participate in this study?
None.
How will we protect your personal information?
No personally identifiable information will be captured. The few demographic questions cannot identify you personally. Your completed survey data will be stored in an encrypted file in an encrypted folder for five years. Data will be encrypted when in transit as you complete the survey and survey responses are stored in the survey tool’s secure repository.
