CRITERIA

CPRS Award recognizing ethics and integrity in the practice of public relations –All aspects of the Code should be demonstrated by recipients of this award.

  1. A member shall practice public relations according to the highest professional standards. Works and leads in alignment with the public interest and dignity of the individual.
  2. A member shall practice the highest standards of honesty, accuracy, integrity and truth, and shall not knowingly disseminate false or misleading information. Demonstrates (role models) the highest standards of honesty, accuracy, integrity and truth.
  3. A member shall deal fairly with past or present employers / clients, fellow practitioners and members of other professions.  Interacts effectively and respectfully with all members of the public relations profession as well as past or present employers or clients. Is also well informed on the ethical codes of other professions and works with those groups to raise ethical standards across all related sectors and the community at large.

Besides demonstrating or role modelling high standards of ethics and integrity, mentoring is key to evolving and enhancing the practice and reputation of PR.

Values-based goals, objectives and standards of behavior are important to all organizations. The recipient of this award should be someone who embraces those values and ensures that fellow leaders do the same by authentically ‘walking the talk’.

Transparency is becoming a must, not a choice. The recipient of this award should be someone who convinces leaders to do the right thing by being transparent – who coaches them through the sometimes-painful process of ‘telling all’ – and who supports them as they rebuild the organization’s, and their own, reputations.

The recipient of this award could be someone who is a humble behind-the-scenes person who remains laser-focused on working quietly to lead people to win-win solutions that demonstrate the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

Curiosity and an appetite for learning and advancing our agenda as a profession should be an important characteristic of this award recipient. This means participating in conversations and research that are refining our standards, and adding to that dialogue by leading discussions about developing concerns as well as new opportunities.

This award should go to someone who has been in the profession for a while and include examples from the individual’s years of practice where they have fulfilled the award criteria (i.e. evidence) backed by commentary from other public relations professionals, or the nominee’s colleagues would help to capture the spirit and commitment the nominee has demonstrated over a sustained period of time.
