Kiva's mission is to connect people, through lending, to alleviate poverty.
A Little Background
- Kiva.org (www.kiva.org) is a not-for-profit based in the U.S that uses the power of the internet to connect people through micro-lending
- Today, the majority of loans on Kiva are made through Kiva’s microfinance partners
- In November of 2011, Kiva launched a pilot program called Kiva Zip, a web-based platform
- The purpose of the pilot is to explore ways Kiva can make its existing model more direct
- Kiva is currently piloting Zip in two geographies: Kenya and the U.S.
What is Kiva Zip?
- Kiva Zip is a website, NOT a bank or a microfinance institution
- Kiva Zip provides 0% interest loans, NOT grants
- The loans are received and repaid through M-PESA
- Kiva Zip does not fund the loans, lenders from around the world fund the loans through Kiva Zip’s website
- Kiva Zip lenders are regular people. They are people who trust the borrowers with their money because they believe in them and their business
- Kiva Zip is a community of people. Our platform is based on building relationships. Lenders and borrowers communicate through SMS
Our Trustees
- Trustees plays a pivotal role in ensuring Kiva Zip builds a strong foundation
- They are individuals or organizations that have a long-standing relationship with entrepreneurs in a community
- They ensure that the borrowers on Zip are credit-worthy and of high-character
- They ensure underbanked borrowers can access Zip and understand what makes the program unique
- They help ensure borrowers repay their loans
