ALAS 2019 - 2020 Legislative Agenda Focus

* 1. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA): Immigration policy to protect eligible undocumented immigrant youth who came to the United States before the age of 16 from deportation. Includes; federal policy for detained and unaccompanied minors and family separation.

* 2. 2020 Census: Impact of addition of citizen status question on the census. Asking about citizenship could scare households with noncitizens from participating and undermine the accuracy of the information the census collects.

* 3. New Democratic majority in House: How legislative projects will impact Latino community i.e. TPS, DACA

* 4. Public Charge: New "public charge" rule would penalize legal immigrants for using government aid.  If enacted, the rule will make it harder for legal immigrants to obtain green cards or permanent residency status if they have used certain government benefits, including Medicaid, food stamps and housing subsidies.

Educational Technology: E-Rate(Perkins Grant)The universal service Schools and Libraries Program provides discounts of up to 90 percent to help eligible schools and libraries in the United States obtain affordable telecommunications and internet access. The program is intended to ensure that schools and libraries have access to affordable telecommunications and information services. Continuation of ERATE and Lifeline programs gives low income students access to affordable broadband both in and out of school.

Teach lifelong learning skills, WHOLE CHILD, ESSA, MEDICAID reimbursements, DACA protections and Higher Education Title II (Professional development for educators).
