Background

Question Title

* 1. What are your design priorities for the Interstate Bridge Replacement?  What problems should the new Interstate Bridge design fix?  The Bridgeton Neighborhood Association members on the Hayden Island / Marine Drive Working Group would like your priorities for the design of the IBR.

The northbound span of the  I-5 Interstate Bridge is now over 100 years old. It is a vital transportation link that impacts all of the West Coast.  It is currently a significant bottleneck and is not seismically resilient. Here is a link to more information about the case for replacing the I-5 bridge FAQ - Interstate Bridge

Question Title

* 2. Safety and Seismic Resilience
Scientists and engineers have concluded that the bridge would not be safe in the event of a magnitude 8 earthquake in the Cascadian Subduction Zone.  You can learn more from this YouTube Video Earthquake vulnerability to the I-5 Bridge. Traffic engineers have also identified potential improvements in traffic safety.

Lowest Priority Moderately Low Priority Moderate Priority Moderately High Priority Highest Priority
Improve seismic resilience of the Bridgeton / Jantzen Beach Bridge
Improve seismic resilience of the main span over the Columbia River
Improve bicycle and Pedestrian safety on the Bridge
Improve safety on the Northbound I-5 ramp on Hayden Island
Improve safety of the Southbound I-5 ramp on SR 14 in Vancouver

Question Title

* 3. Traffic Flow and Congestion
The I-5 Interstate Bridge is well over its intended capacity.  Backups begin as early as 1:30PM at the Marine Drive interchange and extend through evening rush hour. Please give us your priority for solving the following problems.

Lowest Priority Moderately Low Priority Moderate Priority Moderately High Priority Highest Priority
Eliminate bridge lifts
Eliminate / reduce congestion on Marine Drive Northbound ramps during the evening rush hour
Eliminate / reduce congestion on SR 14 Southbound ramps during the morning rush hour
Eliminate / reduce congestion on Northbound I-5 ramp on Hayden Island
Reduced congestion / faster commute southbound during AM rush hour
Reduced congestion / faster commute northbound during PM rush hour
Faster less congested travel east-west on Hayden Island

Question Title

* 4. Mass Transit / Alternative Transportation
The Interstate Bridge Replacement could enhance mass transit and alternative transportation.

Lowest Priority Moderately Low Priority Moderate Priority Moderately High Priority Highest Priority
Extend TriMet Max Line to Hayden Island
Extend TriMet line to Vancouver
Build a multi-modal (bus /light rail) transit center on Hayden Island
Build a local access bridge between Bridgeton and Hayden Island
Create a convenient connection between TriMet Max Line and C-Tran for commuters
Improve pedestrian / bicycle access to/from Vancouver - Hayden Island - Bridgeton Expo
