Survey overview
The purpose of the survey is to explore the relation between students’ analytical decision-making, confidence and their broader ethical academic outlook. This study is important as it aims to develop understanding in the relation between the confidence levels when making decisions and students’ self-reporting levels of responsibility. The study is being conducted by Declan Aberdeen at Glasgow Caledonian University as part of the MSc Risk Management degree and under the supervision of Claire MacRae.
Survey structure
This survey has two distinct sections. The first section involves interacting with a series of analytical reasoning scenarios. The second section asks a series of questions regarding your personal beliefs and values on academic and professional responsibility. Answers to the questions will be either multiple choice or written numerical or text responses. Once you have answered a question, you will not be able to return to the previous page.
Data collection and use
The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary. You have the right to decline to participate from the survey at any point during the survey. Because the data is entirely anonymous from the moment of collection, once you complete the survey, it will not be possible to withdraw your specific responses as we will have no way of identifying which response belongs to you. Any incomplete surveys will not be used.
Possible risks when taking part
You will be asked questions related to personal views on responsibility. However, all responses collected are anonymous. No personal identifiable information is requested or stored. All raw data is handled securely, kept confidential, and used strictly for academic analysis within this dissertation project.
Results will be part of an MSc dissertation which will be completed and available from 30 July 2026. Enquiries specifically relating to data protection should be made to the University’s Data Protection Officer (DPO). The DPO can be contacted by email: dataprotection@gcu.ac.uk. If you are unhappy with the response from the University, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The ICO can be contacted by email: casework@ico.org.uk.
