INFORMATION SHEET FOR PARTICIPANTS

This study is being conducted by Drs. Alison Attrill, Chris Fullwood and Darren Chadwick from the University of Wolverhampton's Institute of Psychology. If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a number of questionnaires which will ask you about your previous experience and views of online dating. You will also be provided with a number of fictitious scenarios in which you be asked to advise a 'friend' about a romantic relationship that has been formed online. Additionally, we will ask you to identify the extent to which you consider specific behaviours of online daters to be suspicious and problematic. We anticipate that the survey will take you between 30-45 mins to complete in full.

Please note:

1. You must be aged 18 or over to take part in this study.
2. You can withdraw from this study at any time and for any reason without any adverse consequences. If you do wish to withdraw please discontinue with the survey.
3. All of your answers will be confidential and anonymous. All answer sheets will be anonymous. Participants’ names will not be recorded on any answer sheet.
4. Your data will be pooled with data from other participants and analysed at the group level. Your individual data will not be identifiable. The only people who will have access to the anonymised data will be the main research team and any Research Assistants currently working with that team. It is important to note that at no point will any of these individuals be able to identify you from your data.
5. All raw data will be securely stored. Electronic data will be kept in password protected data files.
6. The data collected may be written up as a manuscript for academic publication. If the manuscript is published, then the data will be destroyed five years from the date of publication.
7. Please note that feedback cannot be given on individual performance, but we will provide an opportunity at the end of the study to answer any questions that might arise from your participation.
8. It is important to note that there are no correct or incorrect answers to any of the statements included in the study. Rather, your honest opinions/behaviours are of interest. Please also note that there is no time limit for completion of the questionnaire, however we anticipate that it will take approx. 1 hour to complete in full.
