Thank you for enquiring about joining Kingsford Legal Centre’s volunteer solicitor programme.

Our evening advice sessions are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Kingsford Legal Centre, which is located on the UNSW campus in Kensington. Volunteer Solicitors commit to attending the same evening advice session — i.e. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday — every fortnight.

As well as providing a community legal service, the Centre is a teaching institution for the UNSW Law School. Students who assist with the advice evenings are either working at Kingsford Legal Centre as part of our clinical legal education programme or enrolled in ‘Law, Ethics and Justice’, which is the UNSW Law School’s legal ethics course.

Ten clients are potentially booked for each session: four each at 18:00 and 18:30, and two at 19:00. Students will take initial instructions from these clients and convey those to you. This exchange is a valuable one for the students, and can be useful for you. It is an opportunity to talk through the instructions and the possible advice, and a chance for research and analysis before going to the client. The student will then accompany you when you give the advice.

Due to its commitments to students, Kingsford Legal Centre only takes on volunteers with a current NSW practicing certificate.

If you are concerned that you do not have the knowledge to advise competently in certain areas, please let us know. The availability of extensive written resources, the supervising solicitor, the law students and the other volunteers ensures that you will have plenty of support. Please complete this form so that your application can be considered.
