(check all that interest you) Cashier at annual sale - CASHIER - Each September the sale is held for 10 days and requires cashiers to process cash, checks and credit cards. Requires two hours of training. Customer service at annual sale - FLOOR VOLUNTEER - Each September the sale is held for 10 days and requires volunteers to assist customers find book titles, assist customers find book categories, and to keep the books tidy. Requires two hours of training. Sorting books - ROUGH SORTER - This volunteer position processes our donated books by assessing the book and sorting them into 40 different categories. We currently have openings on Saturdays from 10am-noon, Thursdays from 10am-noon, and Mondays from 1pm-3pm. Requires 3 hours of training along with continued mentoring. Pricing and packing books - CATEGORY OWNER/CATEGORY OWNER ASSISTANT - This volunteer position is assigned a category of books and is trained to price books for the annual sale and pack them for storage. Shifts are flexible. Requires introductory and on-going training under a mentor. Researching books online - RESCUER/GATER - This volunteer position is done at the warehouse using a computer. Books are scanned to determine if they have enough value to sell online. Researchers are trained to search online for books and to determine book condition. Currently our rescue sessions are Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm and an afternoon may be added soon. We also have positions for researching 'Specials' where volunteers are trained to research book value online. This work may be done from home. These positions require training to look up books accurately on a computer using our software and to judge the condition of each book. Requires four to six hours of training along with continuous mentoring and guidance. Inspecting books - INSPECTOR - Before books are shipped, they are inspected, flaws are flagged, and smudges are cleaned. This job is done at the warehouse in small groups of up to ten volunteers at a time. It requires no heavy lifting and is done sitting down. We currently have openings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00am to 11:30am, and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30pm. Training includes watching a one-hour video followed by two hours of supervised practice. Writing about a book's condition - WRITER - Books that will be shipped to be sold online need a written description of their condition. This is done at home using your own computer in a time that fits with your schedule. Writers come to the warehouse, pick up boxes of books, take them home and return them when finished. For those interested in writing who don’t have a home computer, it is possible to write-up books at the warehouse during assigned shifts. Writers will be trained to use our software. Requires four to eight hours of training along with continuous mentoring and guidance. Moving boxes of books - BOX PACKER - This includes packing and moving boxes of books from one area of the warehouse to another, from the donation shed to the sorting table and from the warehouse to the storage containers. All new volunteers attend an orientation at our book sale warehouse. The address is 5726 Thornwood Drive in Goleta. It's a right turn off South Kellogg past the car dealerships. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, casual clothes and bring a water bottle if you get thirsty. The orientation takes approximately two hours. When can we expect you?
