On Wednesday, March 18th, the City of Kerman and ELS Architecture and Urban Design facilitated the third and final part of a three-part-series to develop the Concept Design of the new Kerman Area Multi-Generational Center. Based on insights from Workshop #1 (January 21st) and Workshop #2 (February 18th), as well as ongoing live survey responses, the ELS Team has unveiled a Preferred Concept for the new Kerman Area Multi-Generational Center. The community gathered at the Kerman Community Center to hear a presentation from the City and Design Team about the process and input that brought the design to this point. Those in attendance proceded to review the Preferred Concept and provide additional insight.

Like the previous Concepts A, B and C from Workshop #2, the Preferred Concept maintains similar programming but introduces a more refined plan. The plan includes: updated office layouts, pool table and shuffle board inclusion, workout space, and furniture inclusion for lounge/hangout spaces. The courtyard was further studied for additional programming and shade components. As well as smaller design shifts to improve program efficiencies. Kerman signage and way finding was explored to direct the community to the interior courtyard and on to the lobby while also creating synergy between the existing community center and the new center.

Please review the Preferred Concept! Your input is essential as we finalize the Kerman Area Multi-Generational Center before presenting it to the City Council.
Preferred Concept
Key characteristics of the Preferred Concept include:

Separate Expansion: Keeping the new building separate from the existing building allows the project to avoid a seismic retrofit of the existing community center; this enables the new building to be larger, with more programming opportunities.

Organization: The new center is organized around a central courtyard that provides a secluded indoor-outdoor space for gatherings and small events. Interior spaces at the building’s perimeter provide views to G St and Kerckhoff Park to the south, the park to the west, and the parking lot to the north. The new center holds multipurpose rooms, emergency operations, emergency storage, private conference rooms, administrative spaces, kitchen, laundry, restrooms, and showers.

Architectural Character: Sloped roof forms complement the existing community center’s gable roofs while framing the central courtyard. This consistency helps establish a recognizable civic presence and an architectural vocabulary that support a cohesive community and resiliency-oriented campus.

The Preferred Concept reconfigures the parking stalls across the street at Kerckhoff Park, allowing the center to maintain its current parking count; this affords more space for the project site’s redevelopment.
