Longwood University Masters of Science in Athletic Training
Background on the Longwood MSAT Program
Introduction to the Survey:
The Longwood University Athletic Training program will be transitioning to a Masters of Science (MSAT) Athletic Training degree in approximately 2 years. The reason for this transition is that there is a national mandate that entry-level athletic training education programs must be Master’s degree programs by 2022. So, by 2022, Longwood will no longer offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. Therefore, the purpose of this survey is to determine student interest in the Longwood Masters of Science in Athletic Training program. The program will require 2 years of full-time study, beyond the 4-year Bachelor’s degree.
Athletic trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education and training and the states' statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by ATs include injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. The Athletic Training Program at Longwood University is a student-oriented program designed to prepare graduate students both academically and clinically for the profession of athletic training. Theory and practical applications of athletic training principles are distributed through the student’s graduate studies career.
The Athletic Training Program at Longwood University is a rigorous and intense program that places specific requirements and demands on the students enrolled in the program. An objective of this program is to prepare graduates to enter a variety of employment settings and to render care to a wide spectrum of individuals engaged in physical activity.
